Ohh I never thought …
Ohh I never thought of it that way. One thing that does separate snowboards from skate and surfboards is how you change the shape of the board itself by the way you move your feet. This can only be achieved by having a tight boot and binding setup. I rode for years with boots that were too big for me, and now I feel like my whole riding style was off. Naturally, you’ll need to use your shoulders in some situations, but it can be incredibly useful to do without. I just wish I had learned this b4.

Yeah that’s …
Yeah that’s interesting, I’ve noticed the two styles (shoulder turns versus forward foot turns. I think those that do shoulder turns (like me) are those who have also done a lot of skateboarding and surfing. If you are tic-tac’n on a skateboard, you have to throw your shoulders around to rebalance. I think the schooled snowboarders just use forward weight turns.

It’s not all about …
It’s not all about your shoulders. Actually, its about weight placement on the board. You start off down the hill, and you hit toeside. Then, once you are ready to start turning the other way, you replace your weight to the front of the board using your hips, etc. That will cause your board to go straight. Then there you can start the heelside turn. I was suprised when it worked.

Some people feel …
Some people feel they need to turn their shoulders, which in turn twists their body and legs on each turn/carve. It’s better to keep your shoulders parallel over your board, locked in the same position. Focus on leading your turns with your forward food without twisting at all. Usually if boarders need to use their shoulders to turn, their boots are simply too big. Their boots can’t react to subtle foot movements. In that case, check your boot/binding setup at a shop and ask about boot inserts.
